Title
Vernon Castle in Patria Playbill
Description
Based on the novel The Last of the Fighting Channings by Louis Joseph Vance, the first episode in the silent film series titled Patia was directed by Theodore W. Wharton and starred Irene Castle. Released January 14, 1917, the film was planned to show at the Palace Theatre in Traverse City, Michigan on April 17, 1917. The last of the 15 chapters of the series was released April 22, 1917. The plot was political in nature and the series clearly indicated that the US would soon be at war with Japan and Mexico, to the displeasure of Woodrow Wilson, who asked Hearst (William Randolf Hearst financed the production with $90,000) that the anti-Japanese sections be eliminated. As a result, the anti-Japanese sentiment was erased and the anti-Mexican agenda became the series' focus, yet this was less concerning for government officials because of unsettled conditions south of the border. After WWI, Patria was placed before the Senate Committee investigating "German Propaganda."
